Avid-L FAQ

What is AVID-L?

Avid-L is an email discussion list for users of products from Avid Technology, Inc. The primary focus is on non-linear video editors, including the Avid Xpress and Media Composer lines. Topics include troubleshooting, feature/bug questions, news about Avid, wish lists for future products, compatible hardware, compatible software, additional video editing applications that are particularly helpful, and whatever else might concern a professional Avid user.

Avid-L is by and for Avid users, and is really just an on-line users group. It is maintained by Avid, but Avid does not control the content or opinions posted. Avid does reserve the right to kick people off if they seriously misbehave (such as posting obscene, abusive, threatening, or illegal materials). Opinions expressed on Avid-L, even if posted by Avid employees, do not necessarily represent the opinion or other "official word" from Avid, or its subsidiaries or divisions.

Changing Your email Address

To change your email address, send email to ListManager@Avid.com with the following command in the body of your message: set Avid-L email=[new-email-address]

For example, if you are currently subscribed to Avid-L with the address bob@acme.com and want to be subscribed as bob@widget.com you would send the following command from your bob@acme.com account: set Avid-L email=bob@widget.com

Note: The text after the email= cannot have any spaces in it.

Digest Version and Other Member Types

The digest version is a compilation of entire day's Avid-L mail all at once, in one long email message. These are created and sent automatically. This is often the choice of those who want to look over Avid-L mail, but don't want to receive individual messages all day long.

Your options for member type include:

  • Mail — Receive mail as it is contributed.
  • Digest — Receive daily digest with all the messages of the day.
  • MIME — Receive daily digest with all the messages of the day in MIME format.
  • Index — Receive daily index of the subject lines of the messages of the day.
  • Nomail — Receive no mail at all.

To change your member type, send email to ListManager@Avid.com with the command in the body of your message: set Avid-L [member type]

Examples:

set Avid-L digest

set Avid-L MIME

Posting to Avid-L

Send an email message to Avid-L@Avid.com and it will be redistributed to everyone on the list. Please send only items that are worth everyone's attention.

You cannot post to the digest version, as it is simply a compilation of the regular version.

How is the Avid-L going to be managed by Avid?

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster. It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999, Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true international scope with over 300 international members. The community included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields, as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated into Avid.com.
